Extroverts Gamble More Than Introverts – Is That the Case?

When it comes to social orientation people can be roughly divided into two groups – introverts and extroverts. The two camps are majorly different from one another in various aspects of daily lives, hobbies, relationships and more.

In 2005, a group of researchers concluded that it was perhaps the different amount of dopamine in people’s reward systems that was the reason for introverts’ different response to stimuli. In this study, the task that participants had to do was related to gambling. When gambling brought positive results, it was noticed that extroverts exhibited a stronger response in two regions of the brain, meaning that they process reward and surprise differently. Since extroverts responded more strongly to gambling paying off, that would mean they are more likely to engage in gambling affairs.

Gambling is closely related to taking risks we shall discuss which of the two personality types is more likely to engage in risk-taking. In most studies carried out on this topic, extroverts are a definite winner in the field of taking risks. It was furthermore suggested that extroverts are more drawn to gambling because it feeds their ego – trying to do things, where you possibly won’t win, because your ego says the outcome will be different for you, is their speciality. Introverts are less likely to be impulsive and they don’t do anything quickly before thinking it through.

But does that mean that introverts are not at all intrigued by gambling?

One representative of that group, named David MacPhail said: “As an introvert, I do not take the typical risks that are associated with gambling and lotteries because my analytical mind knows the odds are against me.” He also noted that extroverts, who are image and reputation conscious don’t want to do anything that might tarnish their image. So, that would automatically mean that introverts are not that into gambling because it is an unnecessary risk they don’t wish to take. However, all the thinking, weighing and considering in the world doesn’t guarantee a thing and they often realise this and act on things with an unpredictable result. Therefore, there are some introvert gamblers out there and we shall now provide a list of all the signs they possess.

What does an introvert gambler look like?

  • He has a desire for control.
  • He has limited engagement with other players.
  • He is self-centred with a high-degree of sonstraint.
  • He develops an area of expertise in a certain game and masters it.
  • He has a preference for an online identity.

So, what we can infer from this list, is that under certain conditions, introverts can also enjoy gambling. One of the most important factors for introvert gamblers is the online nature of casinos. This way, introverts can gamble as much as they wish without having to communicate with others or doing so via chat with a hidden identity.

So, we can see that introvert gamblers are not that rare of a breed and they can inherit the earth, provided it turns digital!
